The hardware type is a firewall that can be situated in a router that connects your PC to the internet. An example of a good software firewall is Zone Alarm. Zone Alarm is a very effective protection that will hide all the open ports you might have and do not know about them. If you really want to have the best possible firewall protection, I recommend that you use both hardware and software of this type at the same time. A hacker will have a very hard time trying to crack your ports and will most likely not succeed anyway.
