Censoring Cyberspace

What is great about cyberspace is that people can freely express their minds. It is a place where you don’t have to be a famous politician or a multi-millionaire to be able to influence masses. If your arguments are sound, you are going to have a big influence on the public. Unfortunately, there are some voices in many governments which would like to censor cyberspace. They would like to do it, because they fear the truth and are unable to deal with. As a blogger myself, I greatly value the freedom to express myself and I wish everyone that they will be able to do the same in their country. We can just hope that more and more countries will have greater freedoms.

Do You Have Trojans in Your MP3 Files?

Did you ever consider that your mp3 files can be actually Trojans? It seems that Adware creators found a way to create fake mp3 files which would actually be Trojans. When you open the fake file it redirects you to a browser page and asks to install a “media player” to help you play the mp3. Of course once you run it, there is no content and I believe there might be a way to spot a fake file looking at the size of it. Generally single song mp3 files should be 1MB-10MB large. If the file you downloaded has for example 50KB you can be sure that it is fake. Having said that, I am sure that the people behind this Tojan can find a way to artificially inflate the size of the file. So far such files were spotted on 360,000 computers.

How to Handle Dangerous Files

Handling dangerous files such as those which you receive through email from someone you do not trust is risky, yet there are things which you can do to greatly limit the risk. The thing which you should be worried about is whether the file contains a virus, spyware or malware. You can make a scan with your own antivirus software, but most people do not have a good antivirus program and scanning with only one antivirus might not detect a potential threat anyway. Since buying multiple antivirus programs would be very expensive you might be wondering at this point what I am suggesting. My recommendation is to visit a site like virustotal.com and upload the file and it will be automatically scanned by 33 best antivirus programs available. You don’t have to pay anything and you get the best protection - what else could you ask for?

People on the Internet

From time to time we hear people complaining about other internet users for some reasons. Sometimes it is about scammers, sometimes about some crazy stalkers and sometimes it simply about people looking for fights. How come there is so much rude and illogical behavior on the net? There are different explanations, but one of them is that people are more likely to express their true selves on the internet rather than in face-to-face interaction. This seems to be true because you can be anonymous on the internet and can do things which normally you would be afraid of in your social circles. The nature of people is generally bad and they often do not show it if they have to loose something, but on the internet they can often have the opportunity to reveal who they really are.

Search Your Email Faster

MySpace has over 100 million accounts and there are thousands of new users registering each day. This makes MySpace the largest social network and a place which receives tons of traffic every day. MySpace provides services like email and since there are so many accounts it is easy to understand that there has to be advanced technology involved in order for such services to run smoothly. Fortunately for MySpace, Google decided to supply technology which would allow users to search their e-mail more quickly. Will this make MySpace an even more popular website? Probably, but with its current popularity it doesn’t really look like it needs a boost.

Free Music

People listen to music when they want to relax and when they want some entertainment. Music is a universal language and if you look around you, music is everywhere. The best situation would be if music was completely for free. Can it be possible? It may surprise you, but it already is possible in countries like China. Basically, the way that artists and music labels get paid is by ad money. They get paid whenever someone clicks on ads on the site and this way they can earn money without selling music. I don’t think that this system will come to the Western World in the near future, because as long as consumers are happy to pay for each CD or track, there is no reason to change anything.

Internet and Airplanes

Traveling is a great thing to do, but flights are sometimes very long and there are not many things to do while on the plane. Since internet is becoming a quite universal thing and a lot of us use it on a daily basis, it is a logical step to allow passengers to use internet on the plane. That is why airlines are competing with each other to offer the best possible internet on their flights. How important it is for you to have internet wherever you go? I use internet on a daily basis and I have no reason not to sue it on planes as well. After all internet is the best source of information out there and why separate yourself from it?

Watching TV on Your PC

An average American watches TV for more than 4 hours per day and since it seems that this is the most popular form of entertainment, it is important that people should be able to access it from many places. The logical place where you could also access TV programming is your own PC. While the TV screen is usually larger than a monitor, it is often more convenient to be in front of your computer, instead of TV. By buffering videos using a fast broadband connection, this is entirely possible and there are programs which allow watching TV on your own PC. Buffering allows you to pause, fast-forward or rewind if you feel like it.

Teachers Get Discounts?

Being a teacher is not necessarily an easy job. There are many challenges that a teacher has to face: discipline among his students, working after hours at home,
Keeping track with the progress of technology and many more. It seems that no matter how hard this job is, somebody noticed it and this is why there are places where teachers are treated in a special way. If you look around on the internet, you will see that there are many places that offer discounts to teachers like at Barnes&Noble, some cruise trips, Apple Computer Products and many more. In some countries teachers can also travel by train by paying only 50% of the price. Interesting. I wonder however how come they are the only privileged group. I have never heard about any office worker getting discounts anywhere simply because he is an office worker.

Do You Feel Secure with Your Browser?

Security is a big issue when it comes to us being connected to the internet. With so much spyware and malware that attack our computers on a regular basis, it is important to have good protection and have your browser updated. I do not remember anything bad happened to my PC for months or even years now. My Firewall works perfectly so is my Firefox. I read somewhere that Firefox users are the safest users on the internet when it comes to security. I am glad that things look like that. My Firefox my default blocks all new pages that I browse and if I want to see something more closely, I allow the Firefox to access it. All I can say is staying up to date with your browser’s updates will minimize the risk of your computer being infected. I suggest that you get familiar with the updates with your browser as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary risk.
