Things to Do with Your Desktop

There are many interesting things that you can do with your desktop that will improve its looks and functionality. Here are just some of the examples:

  • Set up the screensaver of your choice. To do it, click anywhere on the desktop except for icons, select “Properties” and this should take you to the Display Properties menu. Here look for the Desktop tab and choose the appropriate background of your choice. Click OK to finalize the process.
  • In the same menu like above instead of Desktop tab choose Screensaver tab. Try to experiment with it for a while and pick what suits you the most.
  • If you go to the Settings tab, you will be able to change the display size of your desktop. Make the changes and observe how the icons become either bigger or smaller.

    Watching TV on Your PC

An average American watches TV for more than 4 hours per day and since it seems that this is the most popular form of entertainment, it is important that people should be able to access it from many places. The logical place where you could also access TV programming is your own PC. While the TV screen is usually larger than a monitor, it is often more convenient to be in front of your computer, instead of TV. By buffering videos using a fast broadband connection, this is entirely possible and there are programs which allow watching TV on your own PC. Buffering allows you to pause, fast-forward or rewind if you feel like it.

    Run Programs at Startup

There are many situation where it is a good idea to run certain programs at startup. For example when it comes to me, I always have some things to do on the internet, which means that it is advisable that my browser would open automatically when my computer switches on, in order to avoid doing this manually each day and wasting time. Other people on the other hand may always be working with Photoshop, Office or Flash MX and it might be a good idea to automatically run those programs at startup each day. All you really have to do to in order to run programs at startup is to put a shortcut to a desired program into the startup folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Startup (username is your Windows logon name)

You can make a shortcut to programs by right-clicking on them and selecting “Create Shortcut”.

    Games Influencing the Military

The military wants its soldiers to be as skilled as possible and to achieve this, they require proper training. One of the things which is used to train soldiers are computer simulations. These simulations are used to put a soldier in a dangerous situation and observe his reactions. It is interesting to note that simulations like this have changed dramatically during the last decade and are a lot of more realistic right now. I believe that this is due to the fact that computer games became so popular and eventually consumers demanded better and better games. The graphic engines used in games played for entertainment can be used in simulations made by the army and this is how games influenced the way military can perform their training of soldiers.

Do You Feel Secure with Your Browser?

Security is a big issue when it comes to us being connected to the internet. With so much spyware and malware that attack our computers on a regular basis, it is important to have good protection and have your browser updated. I do not remember anything bad happened to my PC for months or even years now. My Firewall works perfectly so is my Firefox. I read somewhere that Firefox users are the safest users on the internet when it comes to security. I am glad that things look like that. My Firefox my default blocks all new pages that I browse and if I want to see something more closely, I allow the Firefox to access it. All I can say is staying up to date with your browser’s updates will minimize the risk of your computer being infected. I suggest that you get familiar with the updates with your browser as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary risk.

    Your PC Too Slow?

One of the things that I prefer my computer not to do is to run slowly. I simply enjoy when everything run smoothly and I do not have to wait too long for it to load so that I can work on it from the morning. Apart from software and viruses that can possible slow your computer down, there is also another thing. I do it on a regular basis. By it I mean disk defragmenting. It is a very easy solution to speed up your PC after you made sure that malicious software and other viruses are not present on your precious PC. Disk defragmentation is very easy to do and does not take usually a lot of time. It is also very effective too. The performance of your computer is not expected to decrease with its age, so do not blame the age of your sweet PC if he is running more and more slowly. It is not his fault.

How to Add a Header or Footer in PowerPoint

This tip will be very useful to you if you are using PowerPoint to make your slides presentation often. Headers and footers will enable you to display repeatedly the same information on each slide like your name, logo of your company or a date. To add a header or footer, follow these steps:

    1. From View menu select Header and Footer option. A dialog window will appear after you select Header and Footer.
    2. Now select the Slide tab. Here make the necessary checks like Date and time etc. It is also here that you will be able to enumerate the pages and add Footer and then name it.
    3. After you are done, click the Apply button.
    4. Now, under Notes and Handouts tab, select even more options for your headers and footers.
    5. Click Apply to All to finish everything you have done.

This is a feature which is generally used pretty often, so I am sure you will benefit by knowing how to do this.

How to Start Your Adventure with Excel

Every one of us does some things for the first time. For many people Excel is a piece of cake, but there are many people who did not have any contact with it yet. To start your Excel (provided of course that you have it installed) click on the Start menu from the bottom left corner of your screen. A menu after that will pop up. Go to Programs and then look for Microsoft Excel. Once you found it, highlight it and click on it once to open it. Now you are in the spreadsheet. I know that the grid might look intimidating in the beginning, but do not worry, you will get used to it soon. I will continue writing posts about Excel, so do not worry.

    Choosing Between Browsers?

Which browser should I choose? This is the question which many people ask, while others spend hours upon hours in order to prove that their browser is superior. While I also have a browser preference, this is not really what I wanted to talk about this time, as I rather want to point out something. With so many browsers advertising that they are the best, we often feel like we have to make a specific choice and that is not really the case. Some people might not know it, but you can actually have multiple browsers installed on your computer. You can use Firefox, IE or Opera interchangeably and you are not limited to just one. You may wish to use Firefox when accessing dangerous sites, as Firefox is the safest browser, but you may also want to use Internet Explorer when you want to open some of your bookmarked pages. On the other hand you can use Opera when you feel like you want to quickly jump from one tab to another. Don’t limit yourself.
